Being Slim and Your Weigh Scale
September 3, 2009When we try to lose fat and get a slimmer body, we usually talk about ‘weight loss’ and use the weigh scale to measure our progress. But that can be misleading. Muscle weighs more than fat, so if you gain muscle and lose fat you will appear slimmer, but may actually weigh more. Developing muscle is critical to successfully getting rid of unwanted body fat. Muscles need calories just to be maintained, so simply having more muscle will burn more calories 24hrs a day. Worried about gaining too much muscle bulk? Don’t be – it takes a lot of effort to bulk up, especially for women. If a muscle is out of shape, it gets toned before it gets bigger – in other words ‘gaining muscle’ for most women means making the muscle they already have firmer and toned with no added bulk. So don’t be afraid to use weights as part of your weight loss program, and don’t get too obsessed with the scale.
